Hiring local staff abroad – how does that work?
Are you an employer who is looking to hire or who has already employed a local salesperson or representative abroad? Then you might assume, quite understandably, that you can simply apply your own rules, because those are the ones you know. However, this is not without risk.
If your employees live and work in another country, you have to take into account the local rules of that country. And local rules are different in every country!
In addition to this situation in which you very consciously hire a representative in another country to set up or promote the (after) sales of your products in that country, we are also increasingly seeing the situation in which the employee works abroad for other reasons. For example, the shortage on the labor market means that vacancies are increasingly filled with a candidate abroad. Since the corona crisis, working from home has been the rule rather than the exception, so why not abroad?
At Interfisc we have been making use of this construction for many years, as we connect employers in one country with employees in another country.
On our website we offer lots of information on this subject, of which a selection is given below.
Five pitfalls when hiring local staff abroad
In the document below, we list five pitfalls that can cause problems and give rise to unnecessary costs when hiring local staff abroad. We will also provide tips on how to avoid such problems.
Because the pitfalls depend on the knowledge that you as an employer have about the rules in your own country, you can choose from the following versions:
- Five Pitfalls when hiring local staff abroad (with examples, written from a British point of view)
- Fünf Fallstricke bei der Einstellung ortsansässiger Mitarbeiter im Ausland (with examples, written from a German point of view)
- Cinq écueils à éviter quand vous embauchez du personnel local à l’étranger (with examples, written from a Belgian or French point of view)
- Vijf valkuilen bij het aannemen van personeel in het buitenland (with examples, written from a Dutch point of view)
- Vijf valkuilen bij het aannemen van personeel in het buitenland (with examples, written from a Flemish point of view)
Homework abroad
Remote working – at home or abroad – is the order of the day, since the pandemic. Especially as it becomes increasingly difficult to find the right talents. One of our partners Undutchables even speaks of a “war on talent”. Cross-border recruiting of personnel may therefore offer new opportunities.
Together with Undutchables, we discussed this topic in more detail in an online expert talk on 26 november 2021, providing tips that may help you when recruiting and hiring personnel abroad.
