Are you registered in the Dutch Trade Register? Check in time if your business activities are classified in the correct SBI-code!
- Publication date:
Change in Business Register, September 2025 – Check your classification codes!
Between 5 and 7 September 2025, the Dutch Chamber of Commerce (KVK) will revise the classification system (SBI codes or Standard Industrial Classification codes) ) in the Dutch Business Register. Many of the current SBI codes will be updated or replaced. These codes reflect the economic activities carried out by your business in the Netherlands.
What is an SBI code?
SBI is an industrial classification system. Every company that registers in the Trade Register is assigned one or more SBI codes based on its business activities. Put simply: Is the company a wholesaler of building materials, for example, or is it a producer of cement? The Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) also uses the SBI to classify companies according to their main activity and to describe the economy.
The SBI system is updated about once every 15 years. The next major change is coming now, in September 2025. Codes will change and new codes will be added. KVK will update the SBI codes in the Trade Register in early September 2025.

What does this mean for your business?
If the description of your company’s activities in the Dutch Business Register is outdated or inaccurate, the wrong SBI code may be associated with your business. Many organisations use SBI codes, for instance:
- The Dutch Tax Administration uses them to classify business activities, determine VAT obligations, assess eligibility for subsidies or allowances, and calculate contributions to employee insurance and social security schemes.
- The Dutch Tax Administration may verify whether your registered SBI code matches your actual business activities. If inconsistencies are found, they may impose reassessments or take corrective measures.
- Sector-specific pension funds use SBI codes to determine whether your company may be obliged to join their fund. As a result, you could be approached by a (different) pension fund in the near future.
what action should you take?
If your business is registered in the Dutch Business Register, we strongly recommend that you check your registered business activities before September 2025 to ensure they are still accurate and complete:
- Request a recent extract from your Business Register entry [via KVK.nl]
- Review the listed description of activities and your current SBI code(s)
- If necessary, update the description – this can be done via this link: Changing or adding business activities | KVK or via My KVK (with DigiD) or by using the change form. You may also suggest a more appropriate SBI code if applicable.
