Are you considering joining a foreign employer?
If your employer is based abroad, you will notice this during the contract negotiations!
“If only I had found you much sooner!” That is one of the reactions we often hear from employees who come to us. Working for a company abroad is seen by many as an opportunity. But unfortunately, there are some practical hoops and loops you will have to overcome. Read on, and benefit from the experiences of all your compatriots who have gone before you!
Many employment relationships between a UK employee and a company based in another country arise because you are an employee of a distributor or commercial agent selling the products of that foreign company. If you click with the company, that would actually like to get more of a foothold in the UK market, what’s stopping you from trying to become their own UK representative? Especially when you were ready for a new step in your career anyway.
How do you negotiate with a foreign employer?
Chances are that the person who negotiates with you on behalf of the foreign employer has a foreign package of employee benefits in mind, similar to what is negotiated with employees in their home country. And as for the payment of taxes and premiums, you will probably be asked to figure out for yourself how it all works.
To prevent you from being sent from pillar to post, navigating a sea of red tape and contradictory advice, we have put together a number of practical tips on the topics listed below:
What can we do for you?
Then chances are that the employer itself does not yet have a payroll in the UK to which you can be simply added. It is also likely that he or she is not well informed about the rules. In that case, you can safely refer to our website, where information is also available in Dutch, French, and German.
Is the employer open to contact with one of our consultants? We are happy to assist in the negotiation process by, for example, making gross/net calculations, calculating the employer’s costs, and drawing up an employment contract. Of course, we pay attention to the primary and secondary employment conditions, because a pay slip alone is not enough.
Have you negotiated an agreement and do you start working for them? Then we will ensure that a personnel & payroll administration is started and we will implement the agreed employment conditions.
Then it is important to insist that the above-mentioned points of interest are carefully considered. Many local payroll providers have no experience in starting up a payroll for a company that is not based in the UK. For example, we often hear that a branch must be set up first, otherwise no employees can be hired.
This is not necessary! Through Interfisc, it is possible to set up a full-fledged British payroll administration, including the necessary insurance. With or without an establishment in the United Kingdom.
Difficult? Not at all!
It is just important to know your way around and make sensible choices. Interfisc can help you with such decisions. Would you like to know more about how that works? Then download our Employees abroad factsheets. They contain information about regulations, labour costs and administrative requirements abroad. All factsheets are available in Dutch, French, English and German.
