Pension in the Netherlands

Pension for employees in the Netherlands

Employees in the Netherlands will only receive a minimum benefit when they retire, because the state pension in the Netherlands is not related to the wages someone earns. For this reason, about 90% of the employees in the Netherlands have a supplementary pension plan, arranged by the employer or via a social sector pension fund.

how is the state pension in the netherlands financed?

Dutch employees pay 100% of the statutory pension’s contributions themselves. Employers do not contribute –as opposed to most countries – where employers pay a compulsory employer’s contribution towards the statutory pension of their employees. Moreover, they will only receive a benefit of around 50% of the minimum wage, because the state pension in the Netherlands is not related to the wages that an employee used to earn before retiring.

For this reason, about 90% of the employees in the Netherlands have a supplementary pension plan, arranged by the employer or via a social sector pension fund. Of course, not offering such a provision would be a disadvantage if you want to make a competitive offer to candidates when offering them a position at your company.

The supplementary pension plan would cost the employer between 12% and 20% of the gross salary, depending on the quality of the arrangement.

please check if there are any mandatory sectoral pension funds

In many sectors, a compulsory supplementary pension has been arranged by branch pension funds. You will need to find out whether a mandatory Dutch collective labour agreement or branch pension fund applies in your situation. To avoid possible fines in the future, we strongly recommend that you arrange for a collective labour agreement/sectoral pension fund investigation to be carried out. This investigation can be carried out by Interfisc at your request.
